Meet Jassi
Meet Jassi – A Special Angel of Amaris
R.I.P. Jassi
Jassi — a name that means “Special Angel; Beauty” — was more than just a joey. She was a symbol of resilience, trust, and the deep, unspoken bond between wildlife and the humans who care for them. Her name, rooted in Hindi, carries the essence of joy and continuity — a perfect reflection of her story and her brave mumma, Jedda.
A Legacy of Strength
Jassi was born into the Amaris mob, a sanctuary where every life is cherished and every journey honored. Her mum, Jedda, had already shown us what it means to fight for life. In 2022, Jedda battled a severe respiratory infection, Bordetella bronchiseptica, losing 25% of her body weight. Her recovery was long and uncertain, but she made it — thanks to round-the-clock care and her own fierce will to survive.
When Jedda gave us Jassi, it felt like a full-circle moment — a continuation of life, love, and healing.
A Bond Like No Other
From the beginning, Jedda was a night pen kid with her bub Jassi, growing up under the watchful eyes of her mumma, Jaffa and the Amaris team. Jedda, ever the devoted mother, would return every night for her bottle, always bringing Jassi with her. Their bond was unbreakable — a quiet, constant presence in the sanctuary.
Even as Jedda began to explore her independence, Jassi remained close. She trusted us — a trust that would prove vital in her final hours.
A Heartbreaking Turn
On what began as a normal day, Jassi came home — but something was terribly wrong. She was hunched, barely moving, her back end bloodied. My heart sank. I rushed to help, using Jedda’s love for a bottle to coax them into the pen. Jassi followed, struggling but trusting.
We sedated her, cleaned her gently, and gave her pain relief. What we discovered was devastating: she had likely been forcibly mated — a brutal reminder that nature, while beautiful, can also be cruel.
Despite our efforts, her injuries were too severe. Her bladder and urethra were torn, and she suffered a full prolapse. We did everything we could — fluids, warmth, sedation, and love. But we couldn’t bring her back.
Saying Goodbye
Jassi passed peacefully, surrounded by warmth and care. She didn’t suffer. She was loved — deeply, fiercely, and without condition.
She now rests with Rossie and Rosie under a woolly bush, her spirit forever part of the sanctuary she called home.
For Jedda, and for All Our Wild Ones
Jedda spent the night in the pen after Jassi’s passing and raced out into the mob the next morning. She carries another bub in her pouch — a new life, a new hope. We pray it brings her comfort.
At Amaris Wildlife Sanctuary, we let our bubs set their own pace. We honor their instincts, their bonds, and their stories. Jassi’s story is one of love, trust, and the heartbreaking reality of wildlife care.
We do this work because they need us. And because every life — like Jassi’s — matters.
Fly free, sweet girl. You were so loved. 💔
